  • Australia’s 2030 Emission Reduction Target

    The Australian Government announced on 11 August 2015 it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 26–28 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030. The Government says the target is a step up from Australia’s current target to reduce emissions to five per cent below 2000 levels by 2020.

    On 13 August 2015, the Australian Energy Market Operator released its 2015 Electricity Statement of Opportunities reporting that in the past 12 months, industry has announced that it intends to withdraw approximately 4,550 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity across the National Electricity Market over the next ten years.

    The Australian Energy Market Commission, on 6 August 2015 released a wholesale gas markets discussion paper for consultation as part of the East Coast Wholesale Gas Market and Pipeline Frameworks Review. The Discussion Paper expands on the requirements for the development of a liquid wholesale gas market and what such a market might look like on the east coast of Australia.

  • The Renewable Energy (Electricity) Amendment Bill 2015 passes through the Senate

    Following on from the report in last month’s edition of the Energy Market Update, the Australian Senate, on 23 June 2015 passed the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Amendment Bill 2015 without amendment. This will see Australia's Large-Scale Renewable Energy Target reduced from 41,000 GWh to 33,000 GWh in 2020.

    Following lengthy negotiations, the Federal Government and Labor opposition have finally reached an agreement on a revised Renewable Energy Target of 33,000 gigawatt hours by 2020. This revises the target down from the 41,000 gigawatt hours target legislated in 2009.
